Theft is stealing other people's property if the owner has placed it in Haraz (Haraz means the place where you keep your property safe from being stolen) .

B - The second time, cutting off four toes of the left foot of the thief.

What is the punishment of theft in Islam .?

Yes it is right .the punishment of theft in Islam is cut of hand but it has very conditions . it means that every theft has not this punishment and just if there are these conditions there is this punishment . Muslims scientists have different ideas about these conditions. Some of them say that there are 25 conditions and some of them say that there are 16 conditions . but those conditions:
1-the thief must be at the bolugh age (it is 15 years old in boys and 9 in daughters but scientists have different ideas about it and some of them say that it is 13 years old in daughters)
2-he/she must be wise in the time of theft and don t be insane (there is no punishment for insane people in Islam)
3-he did not do the theft because of the threat or duress (he/she must have determination in the theft)
4-he/she must have intention for theft
5-he/she must know that it is the another s property .
6-he/she must know that it s snatching is haram.
7-the owner of that property must keep the property in a safe place and it named :(HERZ).(the scientists say that the owner must place it in a safe place and the place must be suitable for keeping of that property and it place named as (HERZ حرز)in Islamic law and it must have some conditions)
8-he/she lonely or with another s help must broke that place (حرز)
9-the value of that property must be 4.5 nokhod gold (it is a criterion between Arabs نخود) minimum .
10-he/she must don t have necessity.
11-the thief don t be the father of the owner (some scientists say that the thief must don t be the father or the mother of the owner but some of them say that the thief must don t be the father of the owner just)
12-the theft was not occurred at the famine year.
13-the Herz(حرز)or the place of keeping of the property was not usurped from the thief.
14-the thief take the property as the theft(not another thing)
15-the Herz (حرز) must be suitable for keeping the property.
16-the property must have the specified owner and don t be from the properties that don t have the specified owners like as public properties.
(Herz is the place of keeping the property for protect it from theft)
However Islam has its definition from theft and it has its kinds too and it is different from the kinds of theft in the some western countries
